Russia not producing more Topol-M mobile complexes - Strategic Rocketforces commander (Part 2)
MOSCOW. April 10 (Interfax-AVN) - Russia has stopped producing
Topol-M mobile strategic missile complexes, and the Russian Strategic
Rocket Forces (RVSN) will get more advanced systems, Russian Strategic
Rocket Forces Commander Col. Gen. Nikolai Solovtsov said.
"In general there will be two missile regiments armed with Topol-M
mobile missile complexes with the Teikovo unit. It is not expected that
Topol-M mobile missile complexes will be put on combat duty," Solovtsov
said.
The second missile regiment of the Teikovo missile division,
Ivanovo region armed with Topol-M is expected to be put on combat duty
by the year's end, he said.
RVSN will start to re-arm the first Teikovo regiment with a new
mobile missile complex, the general said.
According to earlier reports, the issue is about RS-24 missiles
with multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRV).
"When offensive arms of other states are improving, information and
intelligence systems are developing and the U.S. global missile defense
is deployed one cannot stand still in the nuclear missile area,"
Solovtsov said.
"A qualitative improvement of components of Russia's strategic
nuclear forces is required in order to maintain the needed balance in
the area of nuclear deterrence," the general said, adding that the
development of new missile complexes will continue.
"As to silo-based complexes, the RVSN plans to re-arm the sixth
missile regiment of the Tatishchevo unit with Topol-M complexes,"
Solovtsov said.
Six missile launch pads will be put on combat duty in 2009, he
said.
Asked whether the state defense order for Topol-M complexes will be
revised given financial issues, Solovtsov said that "it is not expected
that the state defense order for Topol-M will be reduced."
